8 Fears and Worries most people have when they think about training/starting a new business

Embarking on a new journey can often bring about feelings of nervousness and uncertainty. If you’re considering booking a Relax Kids Training Course or any other childrenโ€™s yoga/mindfulness course, it’s natural to have some worries and doubts.

In this post, weโ€™ll look into the most common reasons and reservations which people have shared with us over the last few years.

1. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™จ๐™˜๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™™ ๐™–๐™—๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ” –  Doing something new like booking a new training course can be intimidating, especially when you’re unsure of what to expect. You might be wondering about the course structure, the learning materials, or the level of support provided. This is so natural as diving into something new can be scary. You can relax as our Training Courses are designed to provide you with a comprehensive experience. With the informative 24 modules and practical exercises as well as ongoing support and resources, we ensure that you have everything you need to thrive and succeed as a Relax Kids coach.

2. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™„ ๐™™๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ช๐™œ๐™ ๐™š๐™ญ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š” –  Many are concerned that they lack prior experience in teaching or working with children or experience in relaxation/meditation. The most important thing in our eyes is your passion and the desire to make a positive impact. Over the last 20 years, we have trained coaches from all backgrounds and experience and many have had no prior experience working in this field. We provide you with the knowledge and skills so you can feel confident engaging and connecting with children.

3. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™„ ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™›๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ ” – In this current climate, it is totally understandable for people to be anxious about this subject. However, the demand for relaxation techniques and mindfulness practices for children is steadily increasing as it self-regulation techniques are so vital for children at this time. We have many self-employed coaches who are running their business  full time and some are earning more than their previous jobs. However, it does take time. We always recommend that you build your business alongside your current job and transition slowly to take out the anxiety. It is of course double the work in the beginning, but it is worth it once you have built your business making a meaningful difference in the lives of children.

4. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™„ ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™›๐™ž๐™™๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™™๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™จ” – One of the primary reasons people feel nervous about booking a training course is a lack of confidence in their abilities. It’s important to remember that confidence is not something you are born with โ€“ it has to developed and nurtured over time.  The best way to develop it, is to feel but fear but do it anyway. Our coaches have a slogan that they like to repeat to each other -JUST DO IT.  They often say the thought of doing it, is usually far worse than actually doing it. We want you to gradually build your confidence and belief in yourself as you witness the positive impact you can have on children’s lives doing this incredible work. We have found that coaches who have felt nervous to start, have grown in confidence to the point they love what they do.

5. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™„ ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™—๐™š ๐™–๐™—๐™ก๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ๐™–๐™œ๐™š ๐™˜๐™๐™ž๐™ก๐™™๐™ง๐™š๐™ฃโ€™๐™จ ๐™—๐™š๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง”  – It’s natural to have concerns about managing children’s behaviour, especially if you have limited experience working with them. Most of class management comes not from theory but getting out there and doing it. It can definitely be scary, you will make mistakes, but that is the way to learn and grow. Once you move through your apprehension, you will start to enjoy and sharing strategies to create a calm and nurturing environment, establish clear boundaries, and manage challenging behaviours with empathy and understanding.  Iโ€™m worried I wonโ€™t make enough money Financial worry is one of the biggest worries of this time as everyoneโ€™s budgets are stretched. We have introduced monthly payments plans to help make the training more affordable for you. This is an investment in yourself as well the lives of the children you’ll be impacting. Many of our coaches have said after the training that the value is actually 10x more than what they paid. We know we are giving you so much value for your money and the value of the knowledge and skills you’ll gain will far outweigh the initial cost.

6. “๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™„โ€™๐™ก๐™ก ๐™—๐™š ๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ง๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™– ๐™—๐™ช๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ ๐™—๐™ฎ ๐™ข๐™ฎ๐™จ๐™š๐™ก๐™›” – Setting up in business alone can be a lonely process especially if you have been used to working in a team. There will be times where you will be alone, planning and running your classes, but we have created a fantastic tribe of coaches who will help support you as you start your coach journey. Once you have trained, you will have access to a community of fellow coaches who are passionate about helping children and are eager to support each other’s growth. We encourage community rather than competition and you will be part of a network that will serve as a valuable source of encouragement, guidance, and inspiration, and help you overcome any self-doubt and remind you to believe in yourself.

7. “๐™„๐™ข ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™™ ๐™„ ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™›๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ ๐™ค๐™ง ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ช๐™œ๐™ ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™š๐™ฉ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ” The training is around 8 hours of training that has been broken up into bite-size pieces. You can slowly progress through the training at your own pace prioritising your time and managing your schedule effectively. Breaking down the course material into smaller more manageable sections will take away overwhelm. You may like to set aside dedicated time for your training to help you steadily work through the course. Work around your children, knowing that you are doing it for them. Remember to take support from others taking the training to keep up your motivation. You will have 6 month to complete the training. If something happens and you need more time, we can of course have a discussion.

8. “๐™„ ๐™›๐™š๐™š๐™ก ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง๐™ซ๐™ค๐™ช๐™จ ๐™–๐™—๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™๐™š๐™ก๐™–๐™ญ ๐™†๐™ž๐™™๐™จ ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ” – Feeling nervous about booking your Relax Kids Training Course is completely normal. However, it’s important to recognise that these fears and concerns can be overcome. By taking this step, you are opening doors to a fulfilling career that allows you to positively impact the lives of children. You may be scared of the unknown, worried about not having the confidence or the right experience or ability to manage the children. Important Message from Marneta

Itโ€™s unfortunate that I have to bring this up, but it’s important.

In recent months, weโ€™ve received multiple reports of coaches operating without a valid license โ€” this even happened earlier today.

You might not realise it, but in today’s interconnected world, word spreads quickly. We often receive positive feedback from parents and teachers whoโ€™ve had wonderful experiences with a coach. They’re eager to share the results from their sessions. However, when we check our database, we sometimes find that the coaches involved are not properly licensed.

We also hear from people interested in training after attending local classes, and also from existing coaches who may query something they have seen or heard – we never divulge information to anyone – we do our own checks.

This situation is unfair to Relax Kids and to the coaches who comply with the rules.

We also have to consider that schools are now contacting us for Letters of Assurance, which we can only comply with if we have all your relevant documentation and you have a license.

Please ensure your license is up to date.

If you’re unsure about your status, check your license here. And if you have not done so already, please sign the Licence Agreement, which is available on the portal. Thank you.

Now, for the serious part: Any coach found operating without a valid license will be charged retroactively at a higher rate, along with additional administrative fees for any licensing requests made outside the usual process.

Just this week, I spoke to two happy customers praising the amazing experience they had with a coach. They were so grateful to Relax Kids, and yet, when I checked, the coaches mentioned were operating without a valid license.

It was truly disappointing.

Iโ€™ve always believed that Relax Kids is guided by the Law of Karma. When we cut corners for short-term gains, we often pay for it later. This is a subtle but powerful truth I stand by.

Weโ€™ve kept our licensing fees low for over 20 years because we believe they are fair and reasonable. But if you are conducting Relax Kids classes and using our 7-step system, you must have a valid license. Without it, you may not be fully covered.

We understand that staying up to date can sometimes slip your mind. Thatโ€™s why, for the next month, weโ€™re offering a FINAL amnesty for coach licenses.

Click here to update your license.

Remember, maintaining your license is not just essential to running Relax Kids classes, but it is also a tax-deductible expense.

Looking ahead, we want to inform you that from January 2025, weโ€™ll be introducing a new pricing structure for licenses, including a subscription model aimed at simplifying the process for you. Weโ€™re also making a few other improvements.

Coaches who sign up after January, will be subject to a small price increase to the license. To be clear, this will NOT impact you as an existing coach, as long as you remain in license. The price you pay will not change.

The price uplift only affects new people who sign up in the New Year and beyond. In fact, the only way you’d be impacted by any price change would be if your license expires and then you renewed after the price rise in 2025.

Rest assured, these changes wonโ€™t affect you immediately, but we wanted to give you a heads-up on whatโ€™s coming in 2025. Our goal is to bring even more value to support you and your business in the future.

So, update your license now, and letโ€™s look forward to 2025 together!

Relax Kids is ultimately protected by the Law of Karma

Wishing you a magical day and peaceful evening,
Marneta and The Relax Kids Team

P.S. If your license has lapsed, click here to renew it.

NOTE:If you are running classes, that you are being paid for, you have to be in license.

Back To School

Help my child concentrate

Getting children to get back into school mode after a long holiday break can be challenging for many parents and teachers.

Here are some simple tips and games to help you improve your child’s concentration.

1. Limit electronic games especially in the evening as these can increase brain activity which affects concentration.

2. Encourage board games and card games which require and so improve concentration.

3. Encourage your child to listen to the Relax Kids Concentration CD each night.

4. For younger children read them a story and ask questions so checking their concentration levels.

5. Play memory games such as Shopping List where your child as to remember and concentrate

6. Make sure your child has plenty of time outside and in nature as this can improve concentration.

7. Consider decorating your child’s room or at least adding something green to create an atmosphere of calm and concentration.

8. Healthy eating can make a huge impact on your child’s concentration. Increase berries and ensure they have a balanced healthy diet.

Here are some exercises to help children develop their concentration

Spot Exercise: Make a spot on the wall with a sticker or ask children to focus on a spot. It needs to be at eye level. Make sure children are about 10 inches away from the spot and let them concentrate on it for a few minutes. Encourage children to breathe deeply as they focus on the spot.

Concentrate on the Within: Lie down and thoroughly relax your muscles. Concentrate on the beating of your heart. Do not pay any attention to anything else. Think how this great organ is pumping the blood to every part of the body; try to actually picture the blood leaving the great reservoir and going in one stream right down to the toes. Picture another going down the arms to the tips of the fingers. After a little practice you can actually feel the blood passing through your system.

Clock watching: Ask children to sit in front of a clock with a second hand. They have to stay as still as possible and follow the second hand with their eyes as it goes round and think of nothing but the watching the second hand. See who can concentrate on the second hand the longest.

Don’t forget the Relax Kids Concentration CD, available in our shop.

International Featured Coach

๐Ÿ’œ Congratulations Ivanฤica Tarade ๐Ÿ’œ

I am Ivanฤica Tarade, Relax kids coach from Zagreb, Croatia.

For the last six years this amazing programme changed my life and helped me to become a more conscious person, more patient mother and coach.

I became an entrepreneur, the owner of Dragonfly (www.dragonfly.hr). That gave me more freedom in life, more time to play with my own children and I enjoy it very much.

I teach Relax kids classes in four towns – Zagreb, Sesvete, Zapreลกiฤ‡ and Kastav (little town on the Adriatic sea) and I promote mindfulness to colleagues in kindergartens and schools.

Last year I started Relax kids classes in one primary school in Zagreb, because I believe that mindfulness should be part of the school programme in Croatia. As well as children, I have group classes for adults and individual classes.

Some children have been taking my classes for several years, so we “growโ€œ together sharing feelings, learning how to preserve our mental health in this chaotic world and we explore their potential.

Last year I organized my first Relax Kids summer camp for one group of children in Zagreb. We spent all week together visiting museums, playing in the parks, having meditation and creative workshops, we even climbed a local mountain.

One day we wrote positive messages on the Post It notes and the children gave the notes randomly to the people in town during our walk in the center of Zagreb.

It was really interesting experience for all, because some people were very grateful and touched when they read it, and some of them were “afraidโ€œ that children are asking for money or something.

I am wishing you all the best in this adventure of life!

Protector of Calm

Message to all our Relax Parents – Be a Protector of Calm

In this unstable time, please try not to buy into the fear and anxiety.

Your children will pick up on your jangled nervous system, so try to manage your energy by listening to soothing music and focussing on your breathing.

Stay present
Limit your time on social media
Ignore things that upset you
Spend less time with people who are stressing
and try not to get involved in group chats based on fear and anxiety

Fear and anxiety weaken your immune system and that is the last thing you want

Pause regularly – do something lovely and read something positive

This time is making us focus on the PRESENT even more and more because no-one knows what is in the future.

Help children not move into fear and anxiety by staying present. It takes practise but it is possible Focus on your mindset

We will be OK

A UNIQUE method of teaching childrenโ€™s mental health wellness

Relax Kids has a unique 7-step system to helping children relax. Our method has been used by hundreds of thousands of children for almost a quarter of a century. It works so well because it worths with childrenโ€™s natural energy system. Our Award Winning system helps create balance in the mind, body and emotions. Forest Bathing

Getting out of the house does wonders for our mental health and it is well known that childrenโ€™s wellbeing increases when they are out in nature.

Have you tried Forest Bathing or ‘Shinrin-yokuโ€™โ€™? It is Japanese for absorbing nature’ and is all about getting out in nature to reduce stress, improve mood and increase energy levels and sleep.

It’s important to get children outside as much as possible, to stimulate their brains away from all the technology distractions they face in today’s world.

Here are some Forest Bathing tips:

Go for a walk, after school, on the weekend, or in the evening.
Feel the crunch of the ground beneath your feet, listen to the birds chirp and admire the beautiful colours.
Feel the wind on your face.
Look up at a tree and notice the shapes of the branches and leaves.
Breathe in the fresh outdoor air and feel invigorated.
Pick up a leaf and notice every detail on it.

You may even like to play an outdoor scavenger hunt where children have to find something green, something made of wood, something hard and something soft etc.

Try these Nature Exercises – indoors or out

Green Breaths – Lie or sit down and place your hand on your tummy. Breathe in and out gently and feel your tummy rising and falling. Now, as you breathe in, imagine you are breathing green light. It feels very calming and peaceful. Now breathe the green light out into the room. Fill the whole room with soft green light. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.

Butterfly Massage – You may like to try these massage strokes on your childโ€™s back or encourage siblings to give each other a relaxing massage. Imagine your thumbs are a caterpillar crawling up your childโ€™s spine. Slowly and gently walk up the sides of the spine like a caterpillar. Walk right up to the neck and down again. Now, rub the back to warm it up. Finally practice some butterfly strokes and flutter your fingers all over your childโ€™s head, neck and back.

If you canโ€™t get outside, our Nature audio brings the quiet of nature inside childrenโ€™s heads and is like Forest Bathing for the mind – without even needing to put on their coats!

The Nature audio includes 16 calming nature relaxation that help soothe anxieties and calm the nerves.
Examples include: lying in the soft grass, sitting in a peaceful cave and flying like a bird.

These relaxations aim to develop confidence and creativity.

The Nature audio is the ultimate endorphin kick and immunity boost. The tracks on this audio will help children feel amazing, by releasing the same positive endorphins as a trip to the sea side, while teaching them important relaxation techniques that will help them manage their emotions as they journey through life.

Try our Nature CD or Nature MP3 and go out an explore all the nature that is around you!

โ€˜My 10 year old son was finding it difficult to get to sleep and was often still awake at midnight. After success with the Nature meditations CD, we now have 2 more and Jack really enjoys picking which one to listen to and choosing which track to start on. Each night is a new meditation adventure for him instead of being a nightmareโ€™ โ€“ parent

๐Ÿ’œ is your head too full?

Is your head hurting with info?

One of the biggest problems we have today is the constant assault of information filling our minds and jostling for our attention.

Could meditation really be the answer?

When I first learnt to meditate 40 years ago, it was so much easier – the only distraction was my Jackie magazine and waiting for someone to call the dial up phone.

Now our lives are full and minds are full.

If you have tried meditation and found it too hard, you might like to try a different way.

Each weekday, I will be offering a LIVE meditation.

Read more about it here: MEDITATION CLUB

5 Habits for a Magical Morning

Help your child build some habits that will help calm their nervous system and give them a great start to the day.

Relax – Ask your child to lie in bed and relax and breathe just for a minute or two.

Stretch – While they are in bed, let them stretch like a cat. They can stretch in anyway that feels good. Stretching is great to help calm the mind and wakes up the body.

Drink – We become dehydrated during sleep so make sure your child drinks a glass of water that has been left by the bed. This will give their brain and brain a boost.

Say THANK YOU – While they are getting ready, remind them to be grateful for all the good things in their life. Older children could write three things in their gratitude diary and younger children can tell you what they are happy for in their life.

Mirror Mirror – When they are looking in the mirror brushing their hair or teeth, remind them to say or think things that they love abut themselves.

Click here if you would love to have a magical morning each day and build some good habits:

HOW TO IMPROVE CHILDRENโ€™S CONCENTRATION

Children as well as adults are finding it increasingly harder to focus and concentrate due to the constant distractions around.

Experts have found that children can concentrate hard for around 3-5 mins for every year of their life so a 6 year old child can focuser around half an hour while a 10 year old can concentrate for an hour.

These timings can seem impossible for some children and so simple slow steps are required to slowly build their power of concentration.

Concentration can arise due to a lack of sleep, poor nutrition and family stress and upheavals.

Signs of poor concentration:
Finds it difficult to sit still and gets distracted easily
Finds it difficult to remember and learn facts
Finds concentrating on homework hard
Daydreams

Tips to aid concentration:
Keep your child physically active
Minimise distractions and keep noise levels low
Reduce screen time and encourage non computer activities
Create achievable goals and rewards
Make a simple timetable for playtime, work time, quiet time, family time and fun time
Encourage โ€˜quiet timeโ€™
Fidget toys are a great support for children who need sensory stimulation – they can help improve concentration and allow the brain to filter out noises and voices
Give your child a fidget toy to help them feel more calm and relaxed manage their stress and anxiety

Here are some fidget toy ideas:
* A piece of velvet or textured cloth
* Putty
* Blu Tack
* Velcro
* Stress ball
* Paperclips
* Smooth pebble

You can also try playing games such as snap or memory to improve brain power and focus.

Colouring and spot the difference sheets can help young children concentrate.

The Memory game where you put 10 or 20 items on a tray, let them look for 30 seconds and then cover up the items and let them remember what was on the tray can aid concentration.

HOW TO HELP CHILDREN SLEEP

In a sleep survey, it was found that nearly two thirds of children in the UK arenโ€™t getting enough sleep. A lack of sleep can have an impact on behaviourAL and cognitive problems.

Troublesome bedtimes can have a devastating effect on family relationships. It can put a strain on the relationship between parent and child, where parents might feel that they have to โ€˜tell offโ€™ their children every night. It can also leave parents or carers feeling as if they have no time to themselves in the evening, or to spend with each other.

Lack of sleep can also affect childrenโ€™s performance in school. Children who havenโ€™t had enough sleep arenโ€™t able to concentrate, engage with their learning or even interact with their classmates. Over-tired children are becoming the norm, with more than a third of primary school teachers saying this is a daily problem for them.

Sleep deprivation has been linked with several serious health concerns, including depression and obesity. However, the good news is that overwhelming evidence suggests that early intervention can significantly reduce the risk of health implications (Baglioni et al, 2011). Sleeping problems should therefore be dealt with as soon as possible.

Symptoms of sleep deprivation:
Morning Grogginess
Falling asleep in the day
Moodiness and irritability
Temper tantrums
Lack of emotional control
Poor attention span and alertness
Poorer memory and concentration
Lack of motivation
Behaviour issues

Children need between 9 and 10 hours. Teenagers need around 9-10 hours.

Help your child switch off their mind with simple sleep tips:
Encouraging calming activities at least an hour before bed
Dim the lights as the evening progresses
Encourage your child to stay in bed whilst they read, stretch, give their hands a massage or listen to calming music
Let them stroke some soft velvet or a cuddly toy or cuddle a hot water bottle
Older children can journal for a while if they are struggling to sleep
Humming can help calm down the nervous system and relax face and neck
Deep breathing can bring deep feelings of relaxation
Affirmations such as โ€˜I feel sleepy, I am relaxedโ€™ can be repeated
Try playing a Relax Kids audio or read from one of the Relax Kids books.

After many sleepless nights with my 3 year old son, I was sure there wasnโ€™t an end to the cycle of waking 3-4 times in night. I didnโ€™t think the Relax Kids CD would work straight away but after about 45 mins he was totally quiet! When morning came I realised he hadnโ€™t woken once in night. Next night was the same, except he was asleep within 15 minutes! It definitely works.

Vicky

This CD brilliant, my 9 year old son has Aspergers and it really helps him to switch off and reduce his anxiety levels at bedtime.

Maxine

We bought the Quiet Spaces CD last week and already Amelia ( 6yrs ) is settling well at bedtime. Thank you!

Elaine

Tonight, after some gentle persuasion, Tom fell asleep on his own listening to your Quiet Spaces CD. Iโ€™m so pleased! Previously he wasnโ€™t happy unless I was lying in bed with him while he clambered, chattered and sang himself to sleep! Thank you.

HOW TO BOOST CHILDREN’S SELF ESTEEM

Childrenโ€™s self-esteem issues are increasing as society is putting more and more pressure on children and young people to look, act and be a certain way. Social media, bullying, exam pressure and family problems can all impact childrenโ€™s self-esteem.

Self-esteem is how a child feels about themselves and this can affect they way they interact with others and the world around them. Most children will slip into low self-esteem mode when faced with challenges and changes in life such as illness, moving house, parentโ€™s divorce and bereavement and may need some support to get through.

Symptoms of low self-esteem:
Lack of confidenceFeel alone and isolated
Struggle with new activities and change
Struggle to make and keep friends
Struggle with failure
Inability to be proud of their achievements
Put themselves down often
Compare themselves to others negatively

Tips to build good self-esteem:
Encourage your child to see and appreciate their uniqueness
Show lots of love and encouragement and remind them what makes them special
Model good self-esteem and use positive words when talking about yourself and others
Encourage them to try out new activities and learn new skills
Encourage them to have a go at something and it is ok to fail or not get it right
Make lists of all their achievements and note how hard they worked
Reassure your child that making a mistakes is normal and no-one is perfect
Talk more and ask how they feel, talking about their ideas and what went well each day
Check them when they criticise themselves
Encourage a growth mindset approach and instead of saying โ€˜I canโ€™t do itโ€™ say โ€˜I canโ€™t do it yet and I will try my bestโ€™

Use affirmations to help build self-esteem
Affirmations are so important to help keep children’s minds healthy. Here is a simple way of explaining affirmations to children.

Just as we eat healthy food to help our bodies grow strong and healthy so we have positive and happy thoughts to help our minds so we can grow up feeling strong and confident inside.

Affirmations are short statements of personal belief that make us feel good about ourselves and our abilities and achievements. It is important that they are said or written in the first person, present tense and are positive.

Top athletes use affirmations to help them achieve their goals and improve their performance. Positive affirmations help us reduce negative self-talk and remind us of who we are, our greatness and what we want to achieve.

The more we repeat happy and positive thoughts, the more happy and positive we feel. The more we think happy and positive thoughts, the more likely we are to say positive words and so it perform positive actions.

Ask your child to stay still for a few moments and as they breath in say one of the following affirmations ‘I am peaceful’ ‘I am confident’ ‘I am bright’ and as they breath out, they repeat ‘I let go of sadness’ ‘I let go of anxiety’ etc. In a short time, their body will be filled with happy hormones as their anxiety reduces and they feel calm and confident.

Once they have mastered this simple technique, they will be able to use it in any upsetting or stressful situation.

Mirror work is a fantastic tool that can help children build their self esteem daily. It is simple to do, although can be hard to start with, children will grow to enjoy it as they begin to accept themselves, see their qualities, strengths and abilities.

Mirror work can also help improve body image and help children feel more positive about themselves. Regular mirror work can help decrease feelings of self hatred as well as destructive thoughts and feelings of self- deprecations, shame, feeling unloved and unworthy and incapable.

To do Mirror Work, children sit comfortably in front of a mirror or hold a mirror up to their face. They look into the mirror, straight into their eyes and talk to themselves positively with positive affirmations. The affirmation is repeated very slowly and with meaning over and over.

Children focus and look deeply into their eyes as they repeat the affirmation. To start with, they may only be able to manage a couple of seconds, but in time, they will be able to do longer. It also helps if adults are doing this as well so modelling good practice.

Ideally start with the following affirmation. ‘I deeply and completely love and accept myself’ Here are some other affirmations that can be repeated. ‘I accept myself just the way I am’ ‘I am OK’ ‘I am special, unique and valuable’ ‘I am deeply and completely loved’ ‘I am safe’ ‘I am a good person’ ‘I am a wonderful person’ In time children will start to make up their own affirmations and enjoy the activity.

HOW TO HELP ANXIOUS CHILDREN

Child anxiety is on the rise.ย

Research carried out by the Cambridge-based Primary Review says many school children are suffering from ‘deep anxiety’ and are overwhelmed by the messages, instructions and choice thrown at them each day.ย

A young developing brains is fragile and less suited to handling stress and negative emotions such as fear, anger, sadness or sorrow, particularly over longer periods of time.

Feelings of anxiety may be a reaction to personal/ family circumstances, school and peer pressures, media imposition or personal insecurity. These feelings can appear because of conflict with others, fear of rejection, bullying or having to complete tasks that they do not wish to.

Seeing your child anxious or worried about something is upsetting and often parents can feel unsupported and unsure what to do.

The main thing is to reassure that feelings of anxiety are NORMAL and experienced by EVERYONE.

Anxiety symptoms:
* Headaches
* Tummy aches
* Fast Breathing
* Sweating
* Difficulty Sleeping
* Bed wetting
* Feelings of hopelessness
* Feelings of being lost
* Emotional outbursts
* Nail Biting
* Feelings of not wishing to socialise / go to school

Here are 3 tips to help support your child:
Communicate:
Talk with one another about your fear of their anxiety/ what their anxiety is. Let them know that you are there to help them and have your own anxieties, so you normalise it. If they come and say โ€˜My tummy hurtsโ€™, talk about how it feels and explore the feelings together and what might be causing them. They could write down their feelings and sensations in the body as well. The more children start to recognise their bodily feelings, the easier they will be able to communicate and express them.

Write:
Create a positive thinking diary where they write things down that make them feel good about themselves/things that have made them happy that day so they can re-read them whenever they feel low.

Plan:
Sit down together and make an โ€œaction planโ€ that has a main target of reducing their anxiety. It could be that you will consciously change their routine to include a weekly fun night.

Case Study:
One parent found that their child was anxious, particularly about going to an after school club, that had, at one stage, been the highlight of their week. After conversing with their child, they discovered the root of their anxiety and started introducing anxiety management techniques the night before they took part in their club. The went to their club with a calmer, more confident attitude. These techniques included breathing techniques and esteem boosting affirmations that were found in the Relax Kids anxiety and worry kit.

My son suffered severe anxiety about life, no reason, no trigger but he was terrible. He Cried every morning before school, never wanted me to leave him at friends. It was so sad to see but nothing I did helped ….. I then met Jo who came round every week to see Jacob and he totally adored her and throughly looked forward to seeing her every week. I was very lucky as Jacob was in touch with his emotions and was very happy to let people in and so he did with Jo. Breathing, thinking, feeling and movements. Week by week it got easier and now heโ€™s doing things I never though he would do and is trusting himself. Thank you Jo, you changed his world.

Featured Coach – Mandy Worsley

Mandy found her life purpose as The Calm Consultant

After working for 26 years as a paediatric nurse in the NHS, Mandy became self-employed as a well-being specialist working with children and families.

Mandy has collected all the jigsaw pieces of her lifeโ€™s work and put them together to create a beautiful package for families with her company Mini Minds Matter and has her book and Pod Cast launching this year so she can reach even more families around the world.

Mandy trained as a Relax Kids coach, Baby Mindful coach ChargeUp coach and Parent coach as well as having additional qualifications in holistic health practices including fertility.

Over the past 5 years she has worked in local primary schools, nurseries, private 1-2-1 work with families and referrals from local adoption teams. This work and the need for support has increased during the Covid pandemic and I have been able to take her Relax Kids work online.

My life purpose is to help children understand their brain and body connections so they can be in control of their emotional and physical health. I work mainly with children and families who have experienced the care system. I am an adoptive parent (15 years 2 kids now age 16 and 14) baby foster carer, current baby 10 months old. I have worked closely with an adoption charity for 12 years, local authorities in the north west for 10 years and currently Barnardos as Vice Chair on the adoption panel.

Since leaving the NHS 5 years ago I have been able to pursue my life purpose with the help support and wonderful community of Relax Kids coaches and head office team.

Itโ€™s feels amazing to be doing a job I love as it doesnโ€™t feel like work at all, every day is different and it makes me feel happy to help so many children and make a real lasting difference in their lives. What lead me to leave the NHS after 26 years was a culture of negativity which effected my own mental Heath and I no longer felt a love and passion for the work I was doing as my role from hands on face to face support of children and families had diminished so much and my time was spent in meeting and doing paperwork which did not light up my soul.

What can parents and teachers learn from Southgate

I have never watched football, apart from the last 30 mins of 1996 Euros and 2020 (2021) Euros.

The penalties were gut wrenching and seeing Gareth Southgateโ€™s face when he missed and how he was consoled by his manager Venables really stuck with me.

Roll on 25 years and Southgate has his arms around Saka. He knew exactly what it felt like to make an almighty mistake – the pain, the disappointment, the regret, even the embarrassment, guilt and shame. All the emotions are there.

โ€œEmpathy is about standing in someone elseโ€™s shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes. Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place.โ€

There is so much learning for us in Southgateโ€™s actions – empathy, kindness, understanding, support. Most importantly he took responsibility for his action and had to power to accept he made a mistake. All the things that children need from us to help them develop good mental health.

A mistake is a blunder, a slip, error is either an action that we take that is wrong or produces a result that we didnโ€™t intend, was not correct or one we regret in future. It can also be getting something wrong when we are learning something new.

Mistakes are something we all work hard to avoid yet they are so vital to our growth. Life is for growing and expanding yet fear of making a mistake can paralyse us from attempting something new or trying.

Making mistakes is never a nice thing. It feels awful but it is necessary as helps us grow. We learn what feels right and what doesnโ€™t feel right, we learn about our emotions and feelings and we learn about our values. Our values literally shape us.

We have all made mistakes and know what it feels like. Letโ€™s embrace those mistakes, talk about them, tell stories about them, laugh about them and create a culture where it really is OK to make mistakes. Mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of, they make us who we are.

Ways to encourage children to learn from their mistakes:

Encourage your child to just have a go, fall down and get up again, try at something, even if they are worried about looking silly or getting it wrong. This builds their growth mindset.

Accept your own past mistakes and see how they have made you the person you are. You might like to list them and see how you have grown.

Encourage children to say sorry (take responsibility and not blame others) if they have made a mistake that hurts another and make sure you role model this. Being the first one to say sorry shows great strength of character.

Try to reframe mistakes and talk to your child about how the mistake and how it can be avoided in the future.

Give the mistake an autopsy, ask questions to your child – What were you trying to do? What went wrong? Why did it go wrong? This way you can understand the intention behind the action.

Encourage children to see mistakes as a powerful tool to grow and become the best person they can be.

๐Ÿ’œ 3 lions had courage

Dear All,

I felt deeply affected yesterday over the terrible racial abuse at the football. I have found it to be a really personal thing.ย

As a child, I heard of and experienced some of the racism my father Nuno experienced. Even on his honeymoon, he turned up to find ‘no rooms available’ once they saw the colour of his skin.ย

I remember we were at church and the man next to us refused to give him the Sign of Peace and shake hands with him. I felt his hurt and pain. He was silent for the rest of the day.

Yet, he continued to live his life being kind to others, living with values and working for a pittance at a Day Care Centre for Special Needs despite coming from a wealthy background in Goa. He worked hard to to ensure his girls had a good education.ย

The parents of the football boys all did the same. What an incredible generation of immigrants they all were. They struggled and worked hard, they passed on good working ethics to their boys who did them proud, worked hard, honed their skills and made use of their talent.ย

These 3 young men are role models for our next generation. They are not only dedicated to their profession but also give so much back to the community.ย

These boys also have spent time ensuring those from the same disadvantaged backgrounds get fed (Rashford raised 20m), have local pitches and be inspired.ย

It is wonderful to see a new breed of values-based football players. All 3 have shown great courage, strength and dignity and have done us all proud.

Bukayo Saka got As and A*s in all his exams, calls himself a ‘child of God’ and chooses his profession over girlfriends and extravagance. He is 19!!!! Still a teen!ย

Imagine the pressure for someone so young, in front of over 30 million people.ย

In an interview days before the match, he was asked, what do footballers need to play the game. He answered COURAGE.

The more I think about the whole situation, the more I realise that we all need more courage, more courage to stand up and call people out on racism, courage to do the right thing, courage to stand up to what we believe in, courage to show our emotions in front of others. When we have courage, we pass this onto the next generation, just like the parents of these 3 young lions.

Have courage and a magical day,
Marneta

Introducing meditation to children

For many people the word meditation brings to mind an image of snow-topped mountains, absolute silence and the uncomfortable cross-legged lotus position.

However, meditation can mean many different things to many different people, and can be as simple as counting your breaths over your morning cup of camomile.

The term meditation is used widely, and generally means becoming aware of your body, your breathing, your feelings, and entering a deep state of relaxation. It is most often used as a way to reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and get rid of any negative or debilitating thoughts -leaving more room for positivity, creativity and personal growth!

Sounds great, right? So why aren’t we introducing these important skills to children? Meditation has long been thought of as an adults-only practice, but the skills learned through meditation can be invaluable tools for helping children’s emotional and learning development!

Introducing your children to meditation can seem like a daunting task, but it may be simpler than you think. There is evidence to show that children as young as five can learn and benefit from relaxation techniques*(1) Children can be taught a variety of very simple meditation techniques, such as breathing exercises, gentle muscle relaxations, affirmations, and visualisation.

Marneta Viegas has built her company, Relax Kids, on the belief that children can and should learn meditation, and is now the UK leading expert in childrenโ€™s relaxation. She is passionate about making the practice of meditation more accessible for children and has created a range of products and resources that introduce children to meditation in a fun, practical and magical way!

Relax Kids CDs take well-known fairytales, such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Alice in Wonderland, and transform them into beautiful, guided-meditations for children. Children can enjoy listening to the stories, while following simple instructions that will teach them important skills to help their emotional and learning development. For example, children might learn to control their breathing by imagining that they are breathing in colours and then blowing out a rainbow. Or learn progressive muscle relaxation techniques by imagining that they can feel their fingers and toes relax as they sink into a soft fluffy cloud. Or practice visualisation skills by imagining the warm wind on their faces as they take a ride on Aladdinโ€™s magic carpet. Each CD is also brimming with positive affirmations to boost children’s self-esteem and encourage creativity!

As well as helping children learn to relax their bodies and minds, improve self-esteem and boost creativity, studies have shown that teaching children meditation can reduce dysfunctional behaviour *(2). In addition to the fairytale range, Relax Kids have also created a unique range of CDs designed to target specific emotional problems, including Anger Management and Anxiety and Worry. These CDs help children acknowledge their emotions and teach them positive and constructive ways to respond to those feelings. For instance, children will learn techniques like imagining that they are blowing their anger or upset into a balloon and then watching it float away.

Relax Kids products have already helped over 500,000 homes and schools teach children the positive skills learned through meditation. Relax Kids also offers adult training and children’s classes.

Relax Kids and the Brain

For a long time now I have been helping children and families manage their emotions and stress levels, both at school and in the home. Becoming a Relax Kids coach helped me further my skills and empower children and families in being calmer, more self-aware and generally happier.

Over the last few years I have become a bit of a neuroscience junkie, reading and digesting everything I can about the brain. We are at such an exciting time in this field with the ability to see what is happening inside the brain with the use of functional MRI scans and years of research on the effect of modern life including STRESS on our brains, in particular on a child’s developing brain.

I started to see the perfect marriage between Relax Kids and Brain Science.

The beauty of RK is that it has a profound effect when done regularly as children are learning the art of mindfulness.

Stress was thought of as something that only adults felt or had to deal with but anxiety and stress has become one of the main underlying triggers of all behavioural issues. We all release the stress hormone cortisol when we feel fearful about any situation that we feel unsure of but when this is activated at high levels for too long, the world can be a very scary and hostile place.

These high levels of cortisol can make us feel overwhelmed, miserable, threatened and colour everything we do. Adrenaline and noradrenaline can also have a strong impact on our moods as they are both telling the heart to pump faster and harder.

A well-known neuroscientist Candice Pert says ‘Each one of us has his or her own finest drugstore available at the cheapest cost; to produce all the drugs we ever need to run our body and mind’; she goes on to say that unfortunately this is interrupted and stunted by relational stress in childhood. We want opioids and oxytocin to be jointly activated in the brain as these neurochemicals can bring us the deepest sense of calm and happiness.

Over time these are the chemicals released in a Relax Kid’s session through the unique seven step programme.

Many of the children I work with have not had the advantage of a secure attachment so their internal alarm system is hypersensitive; they have never learnt to regulate. This is where RK has such an important role as it enables children to become in tune with their bodies and emotions.

It gives them the skills to regulate and therefore become happier and confident in their ability to respond rather than react to life.

I believe Relax Kids is a life skill that needs to be on the curriculum as it will give children the confidence and strategies to navigate through life in an emotionally intelligent manner.

Regulation is the key to successful relationships; everyone needs Relax Kids in their life!

One Mums Experience

Read one mums experience of using the Relax Kids Books and CDs after escaping an abusive relationship

During Lockdown my 4 year old daughter and I were both having severe nightmares. My little girls night terrors were awful. Her attachment to me was so severe and her PTSD meant that she could not bear me being alone downstairs. Her teacher had bought her a worry monster. Reading her worries made me weep.

I worry that my Daddy will hurt MummyA bad man will take Mummy away.

The bed time routine had become so stressful that we would both be in tears as she would beg me to

Take the bad thing away. Make the bad dreams stop. I am scared of the monsters and daddy.

I ordered the Relax Kids Books and CDs.

For weeks she had cried and screamed in her sleep. The first night that we read the Relax Kids visualisations she went to sleep calmly after the second story. A week later and it was still working. We both slept so much better and this is where our recovery truly began. Steadily her nightmares decreased and I now have my little girl back who loves bedtime and we enjoy so many Relax Kids Magical Adventures together.  Of course, PTSD never fully goes away but at five years old she is able to self-regulate, to control her breathing and to re-focus herself when the bad dreams come.

This is the true Magic of Relax Kids and I was desperate to share it with others.

Calming the Vagus Nerve

The vagus nerve starts at your brain stem and enervates your respiratory and digestive systems, heart, throat and facial muscles. Itโ€™s the longest cranial nerve in your body and is the mediator between your thinking and having a gut feeling.

The vagus nerve regulates the rest and digest response (parasympathetic nervous system).

The health of the vagus nerve is known as vagal tone, just like muscle tone it can be improved through specific activities/exercises.

Increased vagal tone helps slow heart rate and respiration, lowers blood pressure, decreases inflammation, improves sleep, and focus and helps you relax easily.

Here are some activities that stimulate the vagus nerve:

Deep breathing
Laughing
Gargling
Singing
Forward bends
Cold water showers

Regular relaxation sessions help stimulate and therefore calm the nervous system and take our bodies and minds out of a state of stress into a more calm state.

Featured Coach – Lynne Byrne

Experience of working in a CAMHS environment, helped families manage their emotions and live happier lives – Lynne Byrneย

My name is Lynne and I have been a Relax Kids coach for just over two years. I am originally from Dublin and living in Kildare, Ireland.

I came across Relax Kids on social media while I was working in CAMHS. I dealt with parents on a daily basis who were struggling with looking for supports for their children who were suffering from stress and anxiety. Many of these children did not have a diagnosis and I could see parents were left with no follow up support after an assessment. We all suffer with stress and anxiety at some stage in our lives and we all need to learn to manage this stress and this anxiety.

When I researched Relax Kids, I found it embodied everything that these parents and carers were looking for. The entire ethos of Relax Kids and its seven steps benefiting childrens concentration, self-esteem, confidence and teaching them how to self-regulate. I have always believed that confidence is one of the greatest gifts you can give any child as if they believe in themselves, they can accomplish anything. If they can understand their feelings and emotions and regulate them that would be so powerful.

Once I completed the training, I began teaching classes in the community, in schools and in creches. As a Relax Kids coach, I have been able to offer classes for kids as young as 3 in preschool and have run magical adventure classes for those aged 4-9, Chill skills for those aged 9-12. These have all been so amazing and fun to facilitate.

I have been teaching this year remotely through Zoom in schools and have been doing classes through our local Libraries which has been a great platform for reaching so many people and offering free classes to those in the community. I am really looking forward to getting back into schools and the community and teaching face to face.
I absolutely love working as a Relax Kids coach as I have seen how these simple tools and techniques can be used by children and seen how they can benefit them long term. I have personally seen the benefits of using these tools in my home. I am a parent to three children ages 6, 10 and 13.

My six-year-old has benefited so much growing up with Relax Kids and it has helped at every stage such as starting school and most recently dealing with the pandemic. My vision for Relax Kids is to bring it to every school as part of the curriculum and reach as many children as possible giving them the tools to manage their emotions and live happier lives.

My six-year-old daughter was in school one day and her friend lost her pencil case and was very upset and crying. She told her friend to do her five-finger breathing and that would help her feel better. Her friend tried this and said it did not work. So she told her to do some deep belly breathing and she showed her how to do this. My daughter said while practicing this her friend started to laugh and felt much better and then they went looking for her pencil case together.

My tip for any coach starting off is to GO FOR IT

There are so many ways that you can deliver Relax Kids and there is so much support from fellow coaches. Our children need these supports and these tools after the difficult year they have had and you could be the one that gets to provide these supports for them.

I have just recently completed the Baby Mindful and Charge Up courses online and I am so looking forward to bringing these classes to the community also.

What is the Theory Behind Relax Kids?

Relax Kids uses a unique method to take children from high energy and stress levels to a state of relaxation that has been shown to have a positive impact on children’s mental and emotional health and wellbeing. The process involves movement exercises, social games, stretching, peer or self massage, breathing exercises, affirmations and relaxations including visualisations, mindful and autogenic exercises, all elements of which are evidence-based and play an important part in self-regulation. Sessions are fun, interactive and inclusive and enable the child to engage and to fully experience the change for themselves. Our 7-step holistic approach has been shown to have a positive affect on children’s mental, and emotional, health and wellbeing.

The Relax Kids 7 steps are laid out in a certain order to work with children’s natural energy systems. The movement and games stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, stretching exercises encourages their muscles to stretch and stimulates the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Massage helps release oxytocin and happy chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine and breathing exercises stimulate the vagus nerve and lowers the stress responses. Positive affirmations further encourages the release of endorphins as children think and speak positively and finally the relaxation and visualisation exercises, at the end, allow children to calm their inner alarm system and get into a state of deep relaxation.

Our first two stages harness kids natural energy. Exercise and physical activity cause the hypothalamus to release endorphins, which are our bodies form of natural pain relief and pleasure chemicals. Exercise is often used as a treatment for depression and anxiety. Exercise has also been proven to have a positive effect on the concentration levels of children with ADHD and other attention span disorders, and promotes generally better concentration levels throughout the rest of the Relax Kids session.

STRETCH

Muscle stretches have many of the same positive effects as higher intensity exercise. Relax Kids stretches are adapted to be effective and non-strenuous for children. Recent trials have found that Yoga stretches have a generally positive effect on treating depressive disorders, and can also be used effectively to target symptoms of PTSD. It is also a calming warm-down activity that transitions into the following stage.

FEEL

The feel stage of the Relax Kids process involves consensual and clothed self or peer massage. This is an entirely optional stage that can be omitted for children with sensory issues. Massage and positive touch stimulates the long Vagus nerve. This nerve is responsible for the lowering of the heart rate and blood pressure and the production of oxytocin, a chemical produced during positive social experiences, which includes positive touch. Studies have shown people artificially dosed with oxytocin had lower stress levels and higher pleasure chemical levels. Oxytocin also promotes peer bonding, which is important for creating a safe social space within Relax Kids classes.

BREATHE

Deep and controlled breathing promotes full oxygen exchange, which slows the heart rate and decreases blood pressure. Both of these act as a sedative for the body and mind. Deep and slow breathing can be used as an effective way to manage anxiety disorders.

BELIEVE

The believe section of a Relax Kids class focuses on simple self-affirmations such as ‘I am special’; or ‘I am a calm star’. These positive statements affirm perceived good personal qualities, improving self-esteem. Studies have demonstrated that positive affirmations can have a dramatic effect on achievement. A group of stressed pupils performed badly in a problem-solving exercise. However, after doing the same activity following a brief self-affirmation exercise, the participants performed at normal levels.

RELAX

The relax stage consists of being led through a guided meditation either by one of our Coaches or by pre-recorded CD/MP3 tracks provided by Relax Kids. These tracks use a combination of mindfulness exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation to mentally and physically relax participants.

Studies have shown that mindfulness can be effective in combating anxiety disorders in both adults and children, alleviating symptoms of depression, and reducing stress. A 2015 review of mindfulness research suggests that it has a generally positive effect on a wide variety of disorders.

How to teach children meditation and mindfulness

Simple meditation and mindfulness tips

Meditation and relaxation should be top of the school priority list as no child can learn, memorise and concentrate when they are not relaxed and calm.

It is now so important for children to take time out and use their minds without any external stimulation. Regular meditation breaks help children focus, stay calm and give them skills that help them cope with life.

There are many simple ways to introduce a few minutes of meditation into a school or home routine. Once children are used to it, they will grow to love their daily meditation and will want to spend longer enjoying the quiet.

Here are some tips to help you introduce meditation to children.

1. Encourage children but make sure they want to to it. If they are not willing, just let them sit out and listen.

2. Make sure you remain calm and relaxed so modeling good practice.

3. Start with just a minute and let children relax and focus and notice how that feels.

4. Build up the time until they are able to meditate and relax for longer.

5. Keep your tone relaxed and easy so children feel at ease.

6. Read out a simple meditation script and allow pauses in between sentences to help children enjoy silence.

7. As children become more used to the quiet, allow them to sit in silence or with music and give them a positive word to focus on.

8. Ask children to close their eyes and focus on a calming scene and sit there for a few minutes focussing on that.

9. Use a chime or signal so children know when to start and end their few minutes of silence.

10. Don’t expect too much to start with as it takes children some time to get used to the idea of sitting alone and quiet.

Most of all keep it fun and enjoyable so children want to spend time relaxing and learning to meditate.

Relax Kids books and CDs have been created specially to introduce children to meditation in a simple and enjoyable way.

Featured Coach – Tracey Bedford-King

Here is Relax Kids coach Tracey Bedford-King sharing her story. Tracey has recently set up a Chill and Chat cafe with a Relax Kids space for children to relax in.

โ€˜As a child I had very little confidence or self-esteem. I was bullied most days at school and didn’t have a great childhood. As an adult I was emotionally abused by my husband and felt I had very little worth. Eventually I made some changes in my life and ended my marriage. I still struggled with alcohol addiction but eventually overcame this through supportive friends.

I wanted to do something more positive. I had begun working with children with special needs and felt like there was something more that I needed to do. I searched the internet for ways to help relax children and came across Relax Kids. I couldn’t afford to do the course but desperately wanted to do it, and within a few weeks I received the exact amount that I needed for the course from the government which was apparently owed to me as they’d been underpaying my benefits for a long time!

Training as a Relax Kids coach slowly began to give me more confidence and build my self-esteem to the point where I was taking on roles in the community which I previously felt that I wasn’t worthy of or capable of.

I started a Bachelor degree in special needs which I have since graduated from and I have set up a community cafe called Chill and Chat cafe where other people can get experience and confidence.

Now, I have decided to stand as a councillor candidate in my local area as I want to be able to help more people to live better lives.

If it wasn’t for becoming a Relax Kids coach, I don’t think I would have grown in confidence as I have done, and I really don’t think that I’d be doing all the work that I am doing in my community.

Power of Affirmations

Positive thinking can make an enormous difference to not only how you view your life, but the way you behave and the things that happen to you.

Like attracts like, and if you think and act positively, positive things will happen in your life.
For example, if you can learn to feel positive and confident about yourself, that might give you the courage to sign up to that challenging training course you have been thinking about, which might lead to a new job with better opportunities.

You might also have made a new best friend on the training course. Or your courage might even have inspired an old friend to make a positive change in their own life. The effects of positive thinking and action are endless! You could have a ripple-like effect that could change the course of countless peoples lives for the better.ย
In a Relax Kids class we use affirmations to teach children about positivity and learn how to love and accept themselves.ย

Affirmations are positive words or phrases that you repeat to yourself to improve your self-esteem or make you feel better about something. e.g.I am calm and confident or I am OK or I am beautiful inside and out. By saying positive things about themselves out loud, children will learn to believe the things they are saying, and be able to take on that quality.

So I say… so I believe… so I behave.

Here are some affirmations you can try at home with your family. Pick one affirmation each day at repeat it to yourself a few times in the mirror. Children might feel silly at first, but watch how their confidence grows. You could even have a go at making up your own affirmations!ย

I accept myself just the way I am

I am special, unique and valuable

I am deeply and completely loved

I am safe

I am a wonderful person

Featured Coach – Roger Banks

My name is Roger and I have been a Relax Kids coach since September 2020 to say that it has been an interesting experience would be a slight understatement!

I did my training with Aislinn in Manchester on February 1st 2020 when the world was a completely different place. I remember vividly, wandering from my hotel room down High Street past a cat cafรฉ through a bustling city centre to grab a chicken doner and chips from the Turkish Grill (you can take the boy out of Newcastle and all that). Nobody that night had any idea what was coming furthermore the coaches doing the training the following day could not have predicted how important our work was going to become in the era of COVID.

My journey to Relax Kids was after 15-years in primary education and was sparked by returning to the UK from a stint working at the British School of Amsterdam. For almost three years I had lived in a school bubble where children had time and space to express themselves. The culture of the country and the school meant that wellness was further up the agenda and children had more freedom and time to explore and express themselves. This was in stark contrast to the pace at which modern UK primary schools work where the demand on all staff and pupils is huge.

However, starting my own business in the midst of a global pandemic did not seem like the wisest thing to do and I almost committed to another year of teaching but after receiving encouragement from my family and my school I went for it. This isnโ€™t normal behaviour on my part, Iโ€™m very risk averse by nature. I saw the academic year out and started delivering Relax Kids sessions in September 2020 as planned and I have not looked back.

When schools were fully open my in-person sessions had to be COVID-secure which involved a lot of extra preparation in terms of hygiene and risk assessments which took time and money initially but once I was set up the in-person sessions went really well and the feedback was positive. This was at the beginning of what is now a year of measures and the need for what we do is even greater.

Now we are in a place where many children have not had consistent school for months; parents are balancing work and home-schooling; meeting friends is not possible and there seems to be only a chink of light at the end of the tunnel. Tensions are high. What has kept me going is my online sessions and the feedback from children and parents. From January, I have been building my online presence and gaining confidence in delivering sessions through Zoom, Teams and Google Meet. The feedback about children looking forward to the next session, wanting a session again the next day and parents telling me that it was the first time in months that their child had been relaxed has really validated the choice I made back in February 2020.

I often read the Coaches Chat on Facebook and there are so many coaches out there who are in that place I found myself a couple of months ago. Scared to take the plunge. There is so much support out there for you from fellow coaches who will support you in the most amazing ways to give you the confidence or just a gentle push to go for it.

The impact you can make is priceless and the only cost is a little faith in yourself. Your role as a coach is going to become even more important in the post-COVID landscape; now is the time to make those connections with local schools and community groups.

Go for it!

Colour ME

Mindful colouring is good for your child’s brain

Research has shown that mindful colouring can bring a number of benefits for both children and adults.

A recent 2019 study in University of the West of England looked into the benefits of colouring on the mind. Volunteers were asked to either spend 20 minutes reading or 20 minutes colouring in. They were then asked questions about their mood and mindfulness. The research showed that, compared to reading, colouring reduced higher levels of anxiety, and greater improved mindfulness.

Mindful colouring benefits:

  • Provides a brain break and gives the mind a much needed rest from technology
  • Helps decrease anxiety and stress and boosts moods
  • Helps improve concentration and help children stay present and focussed in the moment
  • Mindful colouring a great activity that can be done alone or with the whole family
  • There is no doubt mindful colouring helps improve attention and helps children focus on the present as they breathe slowly and deeply

Our new digital colouring book Colour ME encourages children to step into the world of their imagination as they colour.

There are 62 pages of creative colouring activities – perfect for children of all ages who love colouring.

CD for Nature Lovers

Getting back to nature has become one of our lockdown silver linings as we all value how important being close to nature is. Forest bathing, cloud watching and wild swimming is all on the rise.

When we are in nature, we breathe better, we feel better and think better. As our body and minds do not know the difference between being in nature, children can now get all the healthy benefits without even needing to put on their coats!

Bring all the benefits of being in nature, straight to their bedroom.

As our body and minds do not know the difference between being in nature or imagining being there, children can get an endorphin kick and immunity boost.

Nature was one of our most popular CDs and it has been out of stock for a few year.

We have given it a make over with beautiful new music and a new cover and will be releasing our Limited Edition Nature CD.

The CD includes 16 calming nature relaxation that help soothe anxieties and calm the nerves.
Examples include: lying in the soft grass, sitting in a peaceful cave and flying like a bird. These relaxations aim to develop confidence and creativity.

This CD is designed to engage children while introducing them to relaxation and simple stress-management techniques.

Nature is good for our health and this nature CD is good for our mental health.

Here are a few testimonials from Nature CD lovers:
We have thoroughly enjoyed the Nature meditations CD. I have been recommending it to all parents I know – Parent

My 10 year old son was finding it difficult to get to sleep and was often still awake at midnight. After success with the Nature meditations CD, we now have 2 more and Jack really enjoys picking which one to listen to and choosing which track to start on. Each night is a new meditation adventure for him instead of being a nightmare – Parent

I am a teacher and bought this cd to use for relaxation after PE lessons. The children are in reception and it is an excellent resource – Teacher
