Colour ME Book

Mindful colouring is good for your child’s brain

Research has shown that mindful colouring can bring a number of benefits for both children and adults.  A recent 2019 study in University of the West of England looked into the benefits of colouring on the mind. Volunteers were asked to either spend 20 minutes reading or 20 minutes colouring in. They were then asked questions about their mood and mindfulness. The research showed that, compared to reading, colouring reduced higher levels of anxiety, and greater improved mindfulness.

Mindful colouring benefits:

  • Helps decrease anxiety and stress and boosts moods
  • Helps improve concentration and help children stay present and focussed in the moment

Mindful colouring a great activity that can be done alone or with the whole family. There is no doubt mindful colouring helps improve attention and helps children focus on the present as they breathe slowly and deeply

Colour ME encourages children to step into the world of their imagination as they colour. There over 100 pages of creative colouring activities – perfect for children of all ages who love colouring.

Teaching children to press their own buttons

In this modern day, children are so adept at pressing keyboards and buttons on technology and I wanted to come up with a way to help them use the pressure points on their own body to get the best wellbeing results.

I had the idea wrote this book 3 years ago after being on a wellbeing and self-care retreat in Spain. On the return flight, I saw the pilot flicking and pressing all the plane switches and it made me think about all the pressure points in our bodies.

I started scribbling straight away and the book Press Here – pressure points for instant self-care was created.

In our Relax Kids classes we show children how amazing their bodies and minds are and how interconnected they are. This book is a fun way to help children take control of their physical and emotional wellbeing and see the connection between the two.

There are 35 buttons or energy points in the book and each one has a different purpose. Each of the points can support children with their sleep, anxiety, tension-release, energy, confidence and courage.

There is an energy button for every situation. There is one to help them feel calm, another to help them feel happy and another to help get you out of bed and feel motivated. Learning where your energy buttons are and which ones to press to build ore reduce energy will help you feel more balanced and healthy.

Pressing their energy buttons can help you have a clear mind, regulate your emotions, manage situations, boost your immune system and recharge your mental and physical energy.

Finding Your Purpose

Finding our purpose is possibly the most valuable thing we can do in our lives. Waking up each day with a deep sense of belonging and reason and purpose is an important ingredient for a happy and fulfilling life.

Once we find our purpose, we might feel our life changing direction. When we know what we love doing, we might just find ourselves taking up hobbies or using long lost old skills.

Do you know your purpose? Do you know what makes you tick?

Here are some simple questions to help you find your purpose. Take some time out and get a notebook and pen and answer them all really quickly – without thinking. Then do it again and take time over each question.

At the end, look through your answers and see what jumps out. See what activities are repeated. Notice how it makes you feel.

What makes you smile?

What would you do if you didn’t have to earn money?

What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning?

What did you enjoy doing as a child?

What makes you giggle?

What makes your heart sing?

What activities make you lose track of time?

What makes you feel great about yourself?

What do you believe in?

What are you passionate about?

What is the most important thing in your life?

What are your natural skills and gifts/talents?

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?

What are your strongest values?

Do you have a message to give to others?

Imagine you are in your old age sitting in your garden and looking back on your life.  What would you have liked to achieve?  Looking back on your life, what mattered the most?

Get a board or piece of card and add pictures and words that inspire you.  You might like to create a scrap book full of ideas that might help you lead to your purpose.

You can also keep asking yourself slowly what is my purpose?  What is my purpose?  And write down whatever comes.  Keep doing the exercise until your spine starts to tingle and you feel shivers of delight.  You will know when you have found your purpose.

Once you have discovered your purpose, remind yourself of it each day. You could put it up on your mirror or write a mission statement or affirmation.  Try to do one thing each day that brings you closer to your purpose.

New Years Resolutions

What will you achieve this year…

New Year’s is an occasion celebrated all across the world, people get together and rejoice to ring in the upcoming year, the earliest known New Year celebrations were in Mesopotamia and date back to 2000 BC.

It is the perfect time to reflect on the year, looking back on what went well, what you have achieved& sometimes, where you can improve. Adding to that, it’s also the best time to look ahead to forthcoming year, what things you are looking forward too and what you want to accomplish.

It is tradition among most of the world to make a New Yearโ€™s resolution, whether that’s to stop a bad habit or to start a good one. What better time to motivate yourself to go and achieve that one thing you’ve been seeking for some time, or to put a stop to that bad habit which annoys you. One thing people find with making a resolution at the beginning of the year is that they do not see it through. However, studies show that it takes 66 days to form a habit. That is just over two months or 9 and a half weeks, so that resolution you are trying to keep for the whole year will become a habit after 66 days. After that period of time, your resolution will just become another part of your life and you will do it without even thinking.

Resolutions differ from everyone, some may wish to get active, be more mindful or try to eat healthier. Whilst others may try to completely change the direction of their lives, to find a new calling or to pursue the goal they’ve always dreamed of. Whatever the resolution may be, we all aspire to better ourselves and those around us.

At Relax Kids, our resolution is to keep on supporting children’s mental health in every way possible. Children are our future, it should be a priority to make sure they get the best possible start.

We’ll be doing our bit, but you can help too. Become a Relax Kids coach and teach children how to grow up calm and confident. Find out more about our Training Courses and how you can make a difference. www.relaxkids.com/training

New Year Activities

Activities after you have packed away those Christmas decorations!

It’s time to pack away those Christmas decorations, hoover up the pine needles and make New Years resolutions.

It is an exciting time of year when we have the opportunity to ponder the last year and think about all the wonderful things we want to achieve this year.

Here are some ideas and activities you might like to try with all the family or class.

1. Ask everyone to write down all their hopes and dreams and wishes for 2022
You might like to put them away with the xmas decorations and bring them out and read them next Christmas Eve or New Years Eve. If you are in school, you could hand them to the next form teacher to read out to the children at the end of the Winter term.

2. Make a vision board
Vision boards are made by sticking pictures and words on paper or cardboard. Each word or picture represents that person’s goals for that year.
Get everyone a big piece of paperย or card and ask them to make a vision board or picture for 2022. They can cut out pictures and words from magazines and newspapers. Encourage children to add things that don’t require money such as love, friendship, happiness. You could make a vision board for the whole class or family.

3. Happy Parcel
Make some cards with some questions written on each one.ย  Here are some suggestions.

  1. What was your proudest moment in 2021
  2. What was your happiness moment in 2021
  3. What was your greatest achievement in 2021
  4. Who helped you the most in 2021
  5. What is your greatest memory from 2021

Wrap up a pass the parcel and put the cards in between each layer.
Each family member can pick a card

4. Quiet Reflections
Spend a few moments together reflecting on the last year and having some fantastic positive thoughts and dreams for the new year.
